Frederick Sutherland is an artist and designer with over twenty years of professional experience. He began his career as an artist, designer and builder in 1981. His first contract was to design and build an annex gallery in Los Angeles for Larry Gagosian, the legendary art dealer who owns galleries in Los Angeles, New York and London. The annex was homage to friend and artist Robert Mangurian. Shortly thereafter, Frederick moved to New York City, where he created functional art and lighting sculptures. In addition to making art, he also worked for and with many artists, building art, artist studios and galleries on the lower east side of Manhattan. He continued with these projects until nightclub owner Ian Schraeger (Studio 54, Ian Schraeger Hotels) gave him the position of Art Director at his new nightclub, The Palladium. Frederick’s second foray into the hospitality industry came when entrepreneur Brian McNally recruited him to design and operate another New York nightclub, 428 Lafayette (a.k.a., Indochine). Shortly after moving back to Los Angeles in 1988, Fredrick opened a custom metal furniture studio on Melrose Avenue that catered to a clientele consisting of celebrities and movie studios. For the past sixteen years, Frederick has designed and built many of Hollywood’s most successful restaurants and bars, including Smalls K.O., Olive, Mud, Spun Melvin’s, Lip, Porta Via, Red, Red Santa Monica, Kane, Deep, The Well, Forty Deuce, Monroe’s and Fred 62, which he owns as well. He has also designed multiple retail stores and commercial spaces, including Tracey Ross Boutique, New Media, American Recordings and Anna Sui Boutique. Throughout the years, Frederick has worked on many private residences as well, including the homes of Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, Andy Warhol, Cameron Diaz, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Rick Ruben and Lee Rocker. His vast knowledge of building and design has allowed clients the opportunity to remodel and restore both interiors and exteriors with uncompromising quality.
